Surah Al-Waqiah — the chapter of the Inevitable Event

The opening verses in Arabic
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌ
Transliteration
Idhā waqa'atil-wāqi'ah. Laysa liwaq'atihā kādhibah. Khāfiḍatun rāfi'ah.
Translation (Saheeh International)
"When the Occurrence occurs, there is, at its occurrence, no denial. It will bring down [some] and raise up [others]." (56:1–3)
What the surah is about
Al-Waqiah divides humanity on the Day of Judgement into three groups: the foremost who are brought near, the companions of the right hand, and the companions of the left. It then describes the gardens promised to the first two and the scalding wind and bitter tree awaiting the third. Between those scenes the surah turns to ordinary life — the seed you plant, the water you drink, the fire you kindle — and asks in each case whether you produced it or Allah did. It closes with the moment of death, when the soul reaches the throat and no one present can hold it back.
Its reported virtues
- Recited against poverty. The best-known report, attributed to Ibn Mas'ud ؓ, is: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night will never be afflicted by poverty." (Shu'ab al-Iman of al-Bayhaqi 2497; Sunan Ibn Majah has a related wording). Hadith scholars have criticised its chains, and many classify it as weak — so it is best recited in hope of Allah's provision, not treated as an established promise.
- Read for the reminder, not only the reward. The surah's own subject is provision from Allah and the certainty of the Hereafter, which is why it sits naturally in a nightly routine alongside Surah Al-Mulk.
- The Prophet ﷺ and the surah of ageing. He ﷺ said, "Hud and its sisters have made me grey," naming Al-Waqiah among them. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3297)
When to recite it
The common practice is every night, often after Maghrib or before sleeping, and many also read it on Friday. There is no requirement to recite from memory — reading from the muṣḥaf or a screen is equally valid, and listening attentively works for anyone still learning Arabic.
